Dog Handlers & Truffle Dogs

Truffle dogs are an essential part of modern truffle production, helping locate ripe truffles accurately while minimising disturbance to tree roots and surrounding soil. A well-trained dog protects both the crop and the long-term health of the truffière.

Growers may choose to train and work their own dogs or engage professional truffle dog teams. Both approaches can be effective when dogs are trained to a high standard, handled correctly, and worked with respect for the orchard and the dog’s welfare.

Selecting a Professional Truffle Dog Handler

When engaging a professional truffle dog handler, growers should look for teams with proven experience, well-trained dogs, and a clear understanding of orchard management. Professional handlers should work methodically, respect biosecurity protocols, minimise soil and root disturbance, and communicate clearly with growers about finds and harvest timing. A good handler values the welfare of their dogs, understands seasonal pressures, and works collaboratively to protect both the truffière and the quality of the truffles harvested.

Note: Truffle detection dog teams may not necessarily carry the endorsement of the NZTA and advises that users request references etc. and conduct their own research.

Professional Dog Handler Teams

NZ Truffle Dog Services

Karen Drummond has been a professional truffle dog handler since 2014, working alongside North Island growers to uncover premium truffles with a trusted team of highly skilled dogs. With extensive practical experience across diverse orchards, Karen has helped locate prized species including Tuber melanosporum, Tuber borchii, and Tuber aestivum, supporting growers to achieve consistent and successful harvests.

Responding to growing demand, Truffle Dog Services expanded in 2024 with two additional dog teams, followed by a further two teams in 2025—one of which now supports growers in the South Island. This growth reflects Karen’s commitment to providing reliable, professional services tailored to the evolving needs of New Zealand’s truffle industry.

Since 2015, Karen has also served as an executive member of the New Zealand Truffle Association (NZTA), contributing practical field knowledge and industry insight to help strengthen and advance the sector nationwide.

Beyond orchard searches, Karen developed an online truffle dog training programme designed specifically for growers who want to train their own dogs. The course delivers step-by-step guidance on proven training methods and best practice techniques, enabling participants to build confident, effective truffle dogs for their own properties.
